Overview

For two months each winter, thousands of humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay — and it's one of the best places on earth to see them. This full-day Whale Watching trip from Punta Cana rolls several excursions into one: a scenic bus ride, a boat out onto the bay, the whales themselves, and time on Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island). Season runs January 20 – March 30; next window opens January 2027.

One of the Best Whale-Watching Spots on Earth

Did you know the World Wildlife Fund rates the Dominican Republic among the finest places in the world to watch whales?

It's true — and here's why.

For thousands of years, humpback whales have returned to these waters for just two months out of every year. So if your trip falls between January 20 and March 30, you've timed it perfectly.

Whale watching in the Dominican Republic is in a league of its own, and here's what makes it that way:

  • We're not talking about dozens or even hundreds of humpbacks — we're talking thousands. Every winter they migrate from the frigid North Atlantic down to the warm shelter of Samaná Bay. Think of them as the Caribbean's original snowbirds.
  • And they don't come south just to relax. This is where they come to mate and give birth, in the bay's protected cove. You'll see full-grown adults — some 50 feet long and 8,000 pounds — alongside newborn calves shadowing their mothers.
  • It's mating season, too, which means the males are competing hard. It's common to spot rowdy pods jostling over a single female, complete with pectoral-fin slaps, tail slaps and full-on breaches.

Call it the call of nature — welcome to the "Motel" of the Caribbean.

But the whales are only part of the day. Our Whale Watching trip runs by bus from Punta Cana to Samaná, and there's a lot more folded in.

Along the way you'll also:

  • Settle into a comfortable bus from Punta Cana to the sleepy fishing village of Miches, crossing the scenic Oriental Mountain range to reach the southern shore of Samaná Bay.
  • Board a roomy boat to cross the bay itself, taking in the open water and the mountain ranges rising to the north and south.
  • Sit down to a traditional Dominican lunch — rice, beans, meat, salad, fruit and sweets — served at a peaceful country ranch tucked into Samaná's tropical wilderness. Nobody leaves hungry.
  • Step ashore on Cayo Levantado, better known as Bacardi Island. Three centuries ago it was the hideout of the British pirate Jack Bannister; today this powdery-sand, turquoise-water key is one of the most coveted little islands in the country.

Recap: a bus ride, a boat ride, the whales, and your toes in the sand on famous Cayo Levantado.

If you can only manage one excursion between January and March, make it this one. You get just two months a year to witness these giants, space is very limited, and it's about as good as bucket-list days get.

“The whale-watching trip was seamlessly organised. The plane saved a lot of travel time and allowed to enjoy longer the whales and the El Limon waterfall. Strongly recommend.”

“I’ve read the reviews before we purchased our tickets. I’ve found that everyone has pretty much the same advice, which I agree with now. Follow the advice before you go on board in terms of things to bring and possible sea sickness. Keep in mind, everyone will have different experiences! Ours was amazing! We went with our son on January 28th. It happened to be a calm, beautiful day. Our son is obsessed with whales, so we were worried if we did not see any whales. They advertise that they guarantee whales. We saw so many humpback whales that day, as well as a huge pod of dolphins following the boat. Then we got the real treat…a humpback calf appeared alongside the boat. That was the most amazing site I’ve seen. Enjoy, this trip was worth it!”

“Well worth the money! Today was absolutely incredible. Whale watching excursion took us up close to some of the largest animals on the planet! We drove an open bus through the local cities of Samana D.R. and walked through a forrest to a local waterfall. We then took another boat to a small island with the most gorgeous beach I’ve ever seen. We were able to eat some of the local fare, saw just about everyone riding motorcycles, and got to see a glimpse of life in another country. I’m blown away and this place has exceeded all expectations”
