Overview

Can't pick just one excursion? Samaná is practically three in a day — an open-air safari truck, a jungle trek (or horseback ride) to a 170-foot waterfall, and a catamaran out to the postcard island of Cayo Levantado. Add a home-cooked Dominican lunch and it may be the fullest day the country has to offer.

Three Excursions, One Unforgettable Day

Struggling to narrow your Punta Cana trip down to a single excursion? Then stop struggling — Samaná does the deciding for you. It's really three adventures folded into one day:

  • An open-air safari truck through mountain country
  • A hike (or horseback ride) to a hidden jungle waterfall
  • A catamaran out to a picture-perfect island

And yes, we're throwing that secluded mountain waterfall in on top.

Sounds like too much for one day? It isn't. Here's how it all fits together.

Samaná is a peninsula on the northeast edge of the Dominican Republic, where virgin beaches run up against thick mountain forest. Your day starts with a scenic bus ride from Punta Cana — about an hour, threading between the eastern mountain range and Samaná Bay — to the sleepy fishing village of Miches. There you'll board a catamaran and cross the bay to the peninsula itself.

Safari Truck. From the Samaná docks you climb aboard an open-air safari truck and rumble up into the lush, mountainous backcountry, right to the gateway of one of the country's most beloved waterfalls.

Hike or Horseback Ride. From here it's your call. Lace up and take the 30-minute walk into the forest, or saddle up for a 30-minute ride instead — either way the trail follows the Limón River to the point where it spills over a mountain ridge. Tucked deep in Samaná's humid forest, El Salto El Limón free-falls a full 170 feet into a green lagoon below. How often do you get to wade in cool mountain water in the middle of the Caribbean? Take your time with this one.

Back on the truck, we roll out to a country ranch for a proper Dominican lunch — fish, chicken, rice, beans, salad, fresh fruit and dessert — served in a rustic Caribbean setting that puts any resort "Dominican Menu" to shame.

Catamaran to Cayo Levantado. Then the roomy double-hull catamaran carries you off to the famous Cayo Levantado. The name means "raised cay," and that's exactly what it is: a tiny atoll ringed by powdery sand and lapping turquoise water, with mountains rising to the north and south. Settle in, and don't leave without trying the local piña colada — rum, ice and juice poured straight into a hollowed-out pineapple. (A cup will never feel the same again.)

Space is limited all year round, so if this is your day, book it while you can.

If you only manage one excursion in Punta Cana but you want to see the real Dominican Republic, this is the boat to be on.

Good to know

  • This tour doesn't run during whale season, Mid-January until the end of March. If you're visiting then, take our Whale Watching excursion instead.
  • The hike to the Limón waterfall isn't especially strenuous and is manageable for most people — just expect the path to be muddy, so dress for it.
  • Horseback riding is optional. If you'd rather ride than walk, there's an extra charge of about $50, paid as a gratuity to the handlers — but it's entirely up to you.
  • The itinerary can flip depending on conditions: you might reach the island before the waterfall, or the other way around.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Samana from Punta Cana?
If you're just visiting Samana for the day from Punta Cana, a day excursion is by far the quickest way. Driving to Samana on your own would require you to drive completely around Los Haitises National Park, an approximately 4 hour drive each way. On a day tour, the arrival time is half, about 2 hours. This is because the trip is a combination of bus and boat that takes you directly across the Samana Bay to Samana.
Is horseback riding to Salto Limon mandatory?
No, horseback riding is not mandatory. You can choose to walk instead of horseback. The walk is about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) each way on a flat, sometimes muddy trail.
Are pregnant women allowed to participate?
No, pregnant women cannot participate in the Samana excursion. This is mainly due to the boat ride across Samana Bay.
Can you swim at Cayo Levantado?
Of course you can swim at Cayo Levantado! We encourage it! Enjoy this beautiful tropical setting as much as you can.
How much time do you spend at Cayo Levantado?
The stop at Cayo Levantado is approximately 2 hours.

“It was a great tour Nathan was so informational… the staff was nice and left you to Rome in some areas. I just wish they did smaller if the tour were 6-8 ppl you would have more time enjoying the waterfall/ beach and less time picking up ppl. Also the time at the waterfall felt a bit rushed I wish we had about 1-2 hours at the waterfall to swim in it and just enjoy the nature and the beauty! I know most people go there for pictures but I went to enjoy the land so they need to keep that in mind too”

“We had such a great time!! My 13 yr old son, husband, best friend and I went on the all day excursion to Samana. We had a great trip, was brought to Bacardi Island and were able to snorkel, relax and have a few drinks. We decided not to do the whale watching, which was available to everyone, we decided to relax on the beach. Joaquin was our tour guide for the English speaking tourists. He was great!! He was full of knowledge and made sure we wanted for nothing. He was funny and a nice guy to spend the day with. The horseback ride to waterfall was great and the waterfall was beautiful!! When you get your horse you are accompanied by a "local" that stays with you THE WHOLE time. I wish my Spanish was better, my guide was so sweet and the work these guys put in is crazy. They run along side the horse all the way to waterfall, point out local vegetation on the way, walk you down to the waterfall, take pictures for you, literally rinsed my feet so I could put my shoes back on after swimming, waited for me as I made it back up the trail and then ran all the way back beside the horse. TIP, TIP, TIP these guys, please!! They all do this on the side for extra money and they only do it for tips, felt so bad when I saw a lot of them not being tipped. The trail leading to the falls is a bit difficult for someone if you are not in great shape, but the guides never leave you and help you along the way. Pushing 50 and an extra 15 lbs was my problem getting back up, but still did it, don't let me scare you…totally worth it!!!! Again, I hope all people American and not, understand that when visiting other countries, especially ones that are not as fortunate as we, they depend on us tipping. I don't think a few extra bucks for a wonderful lifetime memory is stretching it too much. It makes a world of difference to all those making sure that we enjoy our time there. Again…you were great Joaquin, thanks for a wonderful experience!!!!”
