Overview

Fire up your automatic buggy and hit the throttle. You'll tear across muddy Dominican backroads, taste your way through a country plantation, cool off in an underground cave river, and roll out onto wild, resort-free Macao Beach. Messy, wild, and unforgettable — the Macao Buggies way.

Get Muddy. Get Wild. Get Macao.

Afraid of a little dirt? Then this one's not for you — no need to read on.

Not afraid of getting filthy? Buckle up and keep reading.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. It's time to shred the Dominican off-road and get gloriously muddy.

Skip the "other" buggy tours — this is the real deal, with the best off-road route around Punta Cana.

It all kicks off at our tucked-away ranch in Macao. Get a feel for your buggy, then blast out into remote farmland where the narrow country lanes hide deep, glorious pools of mud. You'll try to dodge them at first. You won't for long. Nobody does.

This is not a tour for the dainty.

Stop 1 — The Plantation. Pull into a sleepy country farm for a taste of the Dominican Republic's most famous crops: cacao, coffee, tobacco, and Mamajuana, the local spiced-rum "love potion." And yes — here, you can drink and drive.

Back onto the rocky trail, and then…

Stop 2 — The Cave. Climb down into a hidden cave with its own underground river. Jump in, cool off, and rinse away some of that mud.

The longest leg of the ride is also the biggest switch-up: from a hidden countryside cave, we retrace our muddy tracks — and then some — all the way to the sea.

Stop 3 — Macao Beach. One of the last resort-free stretches of coast left in Punta Cana: postcard Caribbean, all amber sand, leaning coconut palms, and clear blue water.

The short version: shred remote farmland, taste a country plantation, swim an underground cave river, and soak up the sun at Macao Beach.

Buggies book out fast in Punta Cana, so grab your spot as early as you can.

Oh — and we'll even hose the buggy down for you afterward. Though if you've read this far, we're guessing you don't mind a little dirt.

Frequently asked questions

What do you wear on a buggy tour?
Most buggy tours in Punta Cana run through unpaved country roads that are dusty when dry and muddy when wet! It's best to wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty. It's also a good idea to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and a bandana to protect your mouth.
How old do you have to be to drive a buggy?
In Punta Cana you must be 18 years old to drive a buggy. There is no age restriction on being a passenger.
Can you wear flip flops on a dune buggy?
Yes you can! Since you'll be getting dirty and wet on most Punta Cana buggy tours, flip flops aren't a bad idea. With that said, a bit sturdier sandal or water shoe would probably be a better choice due to some walking involved.
Are buggies automatic or manual?
All buggies used in excursions in Punta Cana are automatic. They are easy to operate and fun to drive!
Are pregnant woman allowed on a buggy tour?
Pregnant women are not permitted on buggy excursions. The route is incredibly bumpy, making the tour very high risk for pregnant women.
Do you need a drivers license to drive a buggy?
No, a driver's license is not required but you need to be 18 years or older to drive a buggy in Punta Cana.

“We did the buggie excursion with Boogie Adventure. It was a lot of fun. However, I strongly recommend not purchasing anything from their gift shop. Everything was really expensive, the items had no price tag, and we had to hagle a lot to bring the price down. They also have photographers on the trip, they take really nice pictures, but it's way too expensive. I would recommend you befriend someone from the group or plan the trip for more than 2 people so can take nice pictures of each other”

“We did the buggy tour and it was great. Everything was on time and trip was a blast. It is a very busy area with lots of tours so if you are looking for tranquility this is not it. However if you want lots of mud, fun and a few cool spots it is a great time. Be sure you do not wear white and have clothes that can get very dirty. Would recommend the ATV vs buggy if looking to keep cleaner.”
