Swap the resort for real Dominican life for a morning or an afternoon. An open-air safari truck collects you from your hotel and heads inland to farm country, where you'll taste fresh cacao and coffee, see how tobacco is grown, and step inside a local home. It's the short version of our full-day countryside trip, built for travellers who want the culture without giving up the whole day.
The Dominican Republic Beyond the Beach
Most visitors see the coast and little else. This half-day safari takes you inland, into the green farmland and foothills of the Cordillera Oriental, the mountain range nearest to Punta Cana, so you head home knowing something real about the country and the people who live here.
A morning (or afternoon) for all five senses
- Listen as a Dominican family welcomes you into a traditional country home and talks about everyday customs and traditions.
- Look across a working plantation where the island's staple crops grow side by side.
- Taste pure, organic Dominican cacao, harvested from the farms around you, before it ever becomes a chocolate bar.
- Smell freshly ground coffee made from premium beans grown in the Cordillera Oriental.
- Touch hand-picked tobacco leaves. Dominican tobacco is prized worldwide for its full flavour, and only Cuba's is spoken of in the same breath.
Liked something? The cacao, coffee and tobacco you sample are all for sale on site, so you can bring a taste of the trip home with you.
Then on to town and history
- A local elementary school. Stop in at a neighbourhood school for a first-hand look at how public education works in the Dominican Republic.
- Higüey. Ride through one of the oldest cities in the Americas, more than 500 years old and now the capital of La Altagracia province. Its name is usually translated as "Land of the Rising Sun" and comes from the Taíno, whose powerful chiefdom ruled this region until the Spanish conquest wiped it out.
- The Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia. Go inside the country's most important Catholic shrine, home to a painting of the Virgin of Altagracia that Spanish missionaries brought over more than five centuries ago. Pope John Paul II's visit in 1992 sealed its place as a national landmark.
That's a lot of the Dominican Republic in a few hours, seen from the open back of a safari truck. Seats on the half-day run fill quickly, so book early to make sure you get one.
